E si torna qua dopo un anno di attesa. La voglia di rivedere queste auto, respirare questa atmosfera, era tantissima. Mi mancava sentire le orecchie fare male per il suono di motori che al posto di sprigionare cavalli vapore, erogano violenza pura. Un suono che frusta e tira ganci al petto, auto dalle livree iconiche che a prima vista ti gettano in un mondo fatto di panini avvolti nella carta di giornale sorretti da mani sporche di grasso, mentre tra le labbra pende una ‘Nazionali’ senza filtro.

And here we are again after a year of waiting. The desire to see these cars again and to breathe in this atmosphere was immense. I missed the feeling of my ears hurting from the sound of engines that, instead of producing horsepower, unleash pure violence. A sound that lashes and punches your chest, cars with iconic liveries that at first glance throw you into a world of sandwiches wrapped in newspaper held by grease-stained hands, while an unfiltered ‘Nazionali’ hangs from your lips.

Questo è il Peter Auto, un mondo di gentleman’s che grazie alla loro fortuna e alla loro passione, riescono a tenere viva una realtà che è ha segnato il motorsport mondiale, ma anche il mondo delle auto in generale, con perle rare dal design innovativo che ancora oggi risulta attuale e fonte di ispirazione per le auto moderne.

Come ho affrontato fotograficamente questo weekend? beh ovvio alla CDC (termine coniato nel tardo medioevo quando i fabbri progettavano armature poco resistenti). Ogni volta parto e mi segno tutto quello che voglio fare, le categorie ecc, ma poi va tutto a ramengo. C’è troppa roba bella da fotografare, io ogni volta vado in estasi e mando all’aria tutti i miei piani.
Cosi ho passato tutto il venerdi in cerca di ispirazione, quando fortunatamente mi è venuta l’idea di chiedere a vari piloti quale fosse secondo loro il posto migliore nel circuito dove fargli una foto. Cosi sono stato costretto ad accendere la creatività e da li sono partito senza più fermarmi.

How did I approach photographing this weekend? Well, obviously in the TFD way (a term coined in the late Middle Ages when blacksmiths designed flimsy armor). Every time I start, I write down everything I want to do, the categories, etc., but then it all goes to pot. There’s too much beautiful stuff to photograph, and every time I go into a state of euphoria and throw all my plans out the window. So I spent all of Friday looking for inspiration, when fortunately I got the idea to ask various drivers what they thought was the best spot on the circuit to take a picture of them. This way, I was forced to ignite my creativity, and from there, I took off without stopping.

Principalmente ho lavorato sempre su cercare di contestualizzare le foto, oltre ai classici panning, ho anche cercato di provare inquadrature e composizioni più dinamiche e lavorato tantissimo sui ritratti o dettagli. Ho passato tanto tempo nei box, cose che l’anno scorso avevo fatto poco e sicuro che l’anno prossimo farò ancor di più.

I mainly focused on trying to contextualize the photos. Besides the classic panning shots, I also tried to experiment with more dynamic angles and compositions, and I worked a lot on portraits and details. I spent a lot of time in the pits, something I did little of last year, and I’m sure I’ll do even more next year.

Per quanto riguarda il funzionamento della OM-1 direi che confermo i problemi riscontrati l’anno scorso, dove catturare le “fiammate” delle auto è stata un’agonia, direi un buon 95% di foto fuori fuoco, oltre che alle foto fatte con elementi di disturbo, il sensore andava in palla, anche cambiando i settaggi di sensibilità della messa a fuoco. Purtroppo da questo lato, anche se il risultato lo si porta sempre a casa (ma non senza impazzire e imprecare), la OM-1 è ancora indietro parecchio e può migliorare tantissimo.

As for the performance of the OM-1, I would say that I confirm the issues encountered last year. Capturing the ‘flames’ from the cars was a nightmare, with about 95% of the photos out of focus, not to mention the shots with distracting elements. The sensor would freak out, even when changing the focus sensitivity settings. Unfortunately, in this aspect, even though I always manage to get the shot (but not without going crazy and cursing), the OM-1 is still quite behind and has a lot of room for improvement.

Detto questo a parte qualche sporadica foto con il 7-14 f2.8, direi che ho abusato del 12-40 f2.8 e del 40-150 f2.8 (spesso con il 2x). Il 45 f1.2 l’ho usato principalmente per dettagli e ritratti. Ho anche usato dei filtri ND NiSi da 3 e 6 stop perché le condizioni di luce erano fortissime e non volevo chiudere troppo i diaframmi che poi mi vanno a ridurre la qualità dell’immagine.

That said, apart from a few sporadic photos with the 7-14mm f2.8, I would say I overused the 12-40mm f2.8 and the 40-150mm f2.8 (often with the 2x extender). I mainly used the 45mm f1.2 for details and portraits. I also used NiSi 3-stop and 6-stop ND filters because the lighting conditions were very strong, and I didn’t want to close the apertures too much, which would reduce the image quality.
