Come si affronta una gara di endurance sviluppata su 2 giorni?
Ormai sono alla mia 5 presenza a questa gara e non ho mai pensato di dedicarci un progetto che vada oltre al fotografarla, cosi cogliendo la palla al balzo della “novità” video, ho deciso di portarvi con me per questi due giorni di gara.

How do you tackle a two-day endurance race?
I’ve been to this race five times now, and I’ve never thought about dedicating a project beyond just taking photos of it. But seizing the opportunity with the new video trend, I’ve decided to take you along with me for these two days of racing.

Solitamente mi concentravo molto nel portare a casa più scatti possibile di foto di azione in pista, questa volta mi sono focalizzato molto di più nella parte della pitlane e dei box. Ho insistito anche nel riuscire a portare a casa gli scatti dei pit stop dove tramite i tempi lunghi si riesce a dare molta più enfasi alla foto.

Usually, I focused on capturing as many action shots on the track as possible, but this time, I shifted my focus more towards the pit lane and the boxes. I also made it a point to capture pit stop shots, where longer exposure times allowed for more emphasis on the photo.

Complice anche il fatto che il sole tramontava presto e un cielo molto nuvolo sono riuscito anche a fare scatti in “notturna” cosi da portare a casa anche questo risultato che solitamente non ero riuscito ad ottenere in passato, o almeno non ero riuscito ad ottenere quello che avevo in testa.

The fact that the sun set early and the sky was very cloudy helped me capture some “nighttime” shots, something I hadn’t managed to achieve in the past, or at least not what I had envisioned.

Chiunque voglia cimentarsi nelle foto di motorsport, consiglio vivamente di seguire una gara di endurance perché si ha tanto tempo a disposizione per osservare i piloti e le auto, trovare un soggetto interessante e focalizzarsi su lui e su come catturarlo al meglio e poi, quanto sono belli i pit stop? solo per questo ne valgono la pena anche perché grazie a questi si possono fare tantissimi ritratti.

Anyone who wants to delve into motorsport photography, I highly recommend attending an endurance race because you have plenty of time available to observe the drivers and cars, find interesting subjects, and focus on capturing them at their best. And then, how beautiful are the pit stops? Just for this reason alone, they are worth it, also because thanks to them, you can take a lot of portraits.

Per quanto riguarda la macchina fotografica, conoscendo i suoi punti deboli (forte luce e poca affidabilità nel riconoscimento soggetto) sono riuscito a lavorare meglio e soprattutto avere la giusta pazienza per focalizzarmi sugli scatti, cosa che negli anni passati non ero riuscito a gestire bene per via della frenesia di scattare tanto e tutto.

As for the camera, knowing its weaknesses (strong light and unreliable subject recognition), I was able to work better and, most importantly, have the patience to focus on the shots, something I hadn’t managed well in past years due to the frenzy of shooting everything in sight.

Concludendo questo post, devo dire che alla fine la OM-1 rimane comunque una fotocamera estremamente valida, andrebbe solo migliorata la parte di AF, per il resto ormai anche grazie alle nuove tecnologie che sfruttano l’AI persino un sensore micro4/3 può permettersi il lusso di arrivare a 4000 ISO e scattare senza problemi.

To wrap up this post, I have to say that the OM-1 remains an extremely valid camera. The autofocus could be improved, but thanks to new technologies utilizing AI, even a micro4/3 sensor can afford to reach 4000 ISO and shoot without problems.
