Eccoci qua, dopo il lungo letargo invernale si ritorna finalmente a bordo pista pronti a toglierci un pò di ruggine dagli occhi e dalla macchina fotografica.

Un ritorno nella fotografia di motorsport con il botto, grazie a Foto Orlando (www.foto-orlando.it) ho potuto provare la nuovissima OM-1 MarkII, l’ultimissima macchina prodotta da OM-System. Ho voluto tanto provarla perché sin da quando presi la OM-1 e la cominciai a provare nel motorsport mi resi conto che a livello di AF aveva grosse pecche, più altri noiosissimi bug riscontrati nel tempo. Dopo 2 anni speravo in un aggiornamento firmware per poter avere un miglioramento delle prestazioni, ma OM-System ha deciso di sorprendere tutti presentando la OM-1 Mark II. Ammetto che sono uno di quelli che ha storto il naso non comprendendo questa scelta, soprattutto pensando alle promesse fatte al lancio della OM-1, dichiarata come ultra professionale e che sarebbe stata seguita e migliorata costantemente tramite aggiornamenti firmware, purtroppo invece si è rivelata una macchina ancora poco matura per alcuni generi fotografici tra cui il motorsport, cosi alla luce di tutto questo la voglia di provare la nuova macchina era tantissima, soprattutto testare la nuova AI che aiuta l’AF.

A comeback into motorsport photography with a bang, thanks to Foto Orlando (www.foto-orlando.it) I was able to try out the brand new OM-1 MarkII, the latest camera produced by OM-System. I really wanted to try it because ever since I got the OM-1 and started using it in motorsport, I realized that in terms of autofocus it had significant flaws, plus other annoying bugs encountered over time. After 2 years, I hoped for a firmware update to improve performance, but OM-System decided to surprise everyone by presenting the OM-1 Mark II. I admit that I was one of those who frowned upon not understanding this choice, especially considering the promises made at the launch of the OM-1, declared as ultra-professional and that it would be constantly followed and improved through firmware updates. Unfortunately, instead, it turned out to be a still immature camera for some photographic genres including motorsport. So, in light of all this, the desire to try the new camera was immense, especially to test the new AI that helps with autofocus.

I 2 giorni di test sono stati belli intensi, purtroppo Imola è una pista che non riesco ancora a comprendere a livello fotografico, infatti la maggior parte delle foto che ho selezionato da salvare e pubblicare, sono fatte in pit-lane. A bordo pista ci sono state talmente tante condizioni di meteo e luce che non ho saputo cogliere bene la luce e le atmosfere di quei giorni, ma sicuro in pit-lane mi sono divertito a tentare qualche panning spingendo sui grandangoli estremi cosi da avere un taglio molto più dinamico.

The 2 days of testing were quite intense; unfortunately, Imola is a track that I still struggle to understand from a photographic standpoint. In fact, most of the photos I selected to save and publish were taken in the pit lane. There were so many weather and lighting conditions trackside that I couldn’t capture the light and atmosphere of those days well. However, I definitely had fun attempting some panning shots in the pit lane, pushing the limits with extreme wide angles to achieve a much more dynamic composition.

Ne ho anche approfittato del 45 f1.2 PRO e del 40-150 f2.8 PRO per dedicarmi ai ritratti o a qualche foto che raccontasse il lavoro dei meccanici. Purtroppo molte foto che avrei voluto fare all’interno dei box non ho potuto farle in quanto i team richiedevano la privacy e di non fotografare le auto senza carrozzeria.

I also took advantage of the 45mm f1.2 PRO and the 40-150mm f2.8 PRO to focus on portraits or some photos that depicted the mechanics’ work. Unfortunately, many photos that I wanted to take inside the pits I couldn’t capture because the teams requested privacy and not to photograph the cars without bodywork.

Detto questo, ho riassunto quei due giorni e gli esiti del test in un video, dove vi porto a bordo pista con me a vivere 2 giorni di fotografia e a seguire lo sviluppo del test sulla OM-1 MarkII.

Having said that, I summarized those two days and the test results in a video, where I take you trackside with me to experience 2 days of photography and to follow the development of the test on the OM-1 MarkII.
